Early in 2025, Latvia launched its’ Latvian Chip Competence Centre (LCCC) as a follow up to its MoU it declared in 2022 for its semiconductor strategy.
At the Techritory Forum in Riga, Latvia, in October 2025, three Baltic nations – Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia – signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation between their national chip competence centers. They indicated that by aligning national strategies and pooling expertise, the countries could accelerate innovation, expand research capacity, and strengthen the Baltic-Nordic region’s role within Europe’s semiconductor value chain.
In order to discuss this and the broader context in Europe, and the importance of core competences in Latvia in areas like integrated photonics and quantum, EE Times chatted with Haralds Abolins, Partnerships Manager for the LCCC.
