Finally got a coal/ ember using the hand drill on video. I kinda cheated, though. I pre-heated/ dried the spindle and fireboard in my toaster oven (300 F degrees) for about 15 minutes. I think humidity is a factor (I live in FL).
I used a Horseweed stalk for the spindle and a piece of a Palm tree branch for the fireboard. I get the coal/ ember in the house (air-conditioning, low humidity) then blow the ember into flame outside in my backyard. It's been a bit windy lately so I wanted to make sure I had the best chance for success til I get a little more experience under my belt.
