Quick hand drill demo using a thin spindle, a little over 1/4" diameter (or just under 5/16" by 10" long). Cattail on Queen Palm Seed Pod branch. Reasonably good materials to work with.

It took a little longer for the ember because thin Cattail will collapse if you apply too much downward pressure. So, I needed to balance speed with downward pressure.
