Here's a few attempts to get a friction fire ember using store bought Poplar. I couldn't get an ember using store bought Poplar, but, in the end, I did get an ember using a Horseweed spindle on a Yellow Pine fireboard.

This was brought up in a bushcraft web forum so I gave this a go. I had tried this before several months ago, but couldn't remember what issues I had with this. I think something's not right with the wood as Poplar is supposed to be fairly ideal for friction fires.
