I'd heard (read) Elderberry was a good choice of wood for friction fires. I found an Elderberry bush locally and decided to give it a try. It does work well.

Yellow Pine was used for the hand-hold, bow, and fireboard. Elderberry for the spindle.

The goal was only to get a coal.
