I'm using Caesar Weed (a wild weed found here in Florida) as both the spindle & fireboard. The easiest materials I've used thus far. Virtually no wear & tear on the hands. Routine practice for me, though.
Recently, I've had several people ask me about learning just the hand drill friction fire method with the thinking that's all they'd need to know to be able to make a fire if there's no better (easier) way (ie. a survival-like situation). Nothing's farther from the truth.
The hand drill friction fire method is harder to do than it looks. It really is best to learn the bow drill method first before learning the hand drill. Better to understand the fundimentals of friction fire making via the bow drill as it has a mechanical advantage over the hand drill, almost no direct wear & tear on the hands in comparison (ie. blisters), and has more room-for-error (ie. materials flexibility). Better to learn various improvised bow drill techniques over the hand drill if you're thinking along the what-if surivival-type possibilities.
