Mainstream media was quick to report the devastation caused by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, but had little interest in reporting the status of Gulf Coast beaches and waters after the cleanup. As a result, communities like Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama are suffering doubly; not only were traditional fishing grounds closed to local fishermen, their most important source of revenue - tourism - has been severely impacted. Unsure of the condition of the beaches, tourists are staying away in droves, even though the cleanup has been largely successful and the beaches and waters are clean and gorgeous.
