Nepal is home to around 15,000 Tibetan refugees, many of which live in four refugee settlements around Pokhara. In one of these, the Tashiling Tibetan Refugee Settlement, I attended a lama puja at the Shree Gaden Dhargay Ling (Dragyling) Monastery. A Buddhist puja is an expression of honour, worship and devotional attention that includes the use of traditional Tibetan musical instruments including drums, bells, cymbals, horns and throat chanting. Tibetan monks are noted for their skill at chanting, also known as throat-singing, a specialized form of chanting in which the chanter produces multiple distinct pitches simultaneously.
