"Grease" is the title song for the 1978 movie musical Grease. The song is sometimes incorrectly referred to as 'Grease Is the Word'. Written by Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees, and sung by Frankie Valli with backup vocals by Gibb, "Grease" reached the #1 spot on both the US Billboard Hot 100 and Cash Box Top 100 charts. The inspiration for the "Grease" story is based on real-life experiences of creator Jim Jacobs while he attended Taft High School in Norwood Park, Illlinois during the late 1950's and early 1960's. It focuses on the lives of the working-class youth subculture known as greasers. The rock star character Johnny Casino in the story is based on singer Ral Donner (a Presley sound-a-like) who also attended the Taft H.S. at the same time. In 1971, Jacobs and co-author Warren Casey wrote the rock & roll musical stage play "Grease" that premiered in Chicago, then opened in February, 1972 in Manhattan at the then Eden Theater. After 3,388 combined Broadway performances, the musical remains the 15th longest-running show.
