Young anglers aged 7 to 14 cast their lines over the Peter Isola Promenade for this year's annual Junior Shore Fishing Competition.
Warm and humid levante winds offered favorable conditions for the novice anglers who collectively caught over 12 different species of fish, including Horse Mackerel (Jureles), White Bream (Sargo) and the rarer Sheepshead Bream (Sula).
In 7-10 age group, Hailee ended the day with the heaviest fish: a 575g Sheepshead Breem, and was also the Points Aggregate winner.
In the 11-14 age group, last year’s Heaviest Fish winner, Kelvin, returned to defend his crown with a 700g Grey Mullet, whilst newcomer Oliver was the Points Aggregate winner.
Three seminars in the lead up to the competition emphasised the importance of catching suitably sized fish, encouraging a 'catch and release' approach and highlighting legal limits of fish sizes.
The GFSA hopes to inspire the younger generation to enjoy the sport and take an active interest in the marine environment under the guidance of some of Gibraltar’s most experienced anglers.
The competition concludes the GFSA’s summer programme with the Sports and Leisure Authority.
