OK, I picked up a vintage General Electric record player at a church sale today for $5.
I passed it up a couple times and then it dawned on me to look at it’s rarity and notability — so I had to add it to my collection!
In my opinion, the engineering and mechanics of this are superb compared to the cheap Crosley turntables on the market today. This doesn’t have Bluetooth, doesn’t have any other features, but it simply plays records and has a tone control.
The unit seemed to work fine upon initially using it, but I completely re-greased and cleaned things up and replaced the six electrolytic capacitors.
The sound quality in this video is not excellent, and it’s for a couple reasons. First of all, I’m using a crappy record that I hope doesn’t get flagged by copyright. It’s a bunch of hits recorded by other artists to sound like the originals! And the record is pretty heavily worn.
Secondly, the speakers that came with this are not the best, so I hooked up some Zenith Allegros and there’s significantly more fidelity. But you’re not gonna hear it in this video specifically however there’s a segment with them playing. I played a couple other records outside of this video and it sounds quite good for what it is.
I needed a toy to play with and I think that’s what this is but it’s actually very high-quality by today’s standards.
