Woodturning a bowl is always a satisfying woodworking project that takes skill, patience, and creativity. In this project I turn a bowl on the lathe and then take it a step further by adding texture, colour, and a shimmering gold finish.
I start by shaping the bowl using carbide woodturning tools on my Record Power Coronet Herald Wood Lathe. The carbide tools from Easy Wood Tools make it easy to shape the bowl and achieve a really clean surface straight from the tool.
Once the bowl is turned, I use the Dremel 8260 rotary tool to carve texture into the surface. This adds depth and character to the wood and creates the perfect surface for colour and finishing.
After texturing, I apply intrinsic water-based wood stains which soak into the wood and enhance the natural grain while adding rich colour. To make the piece really stand out, I finish it with gold iridescent paint, giving the bowl a subtle shimmering effect that catches the light beautifully.
For the final finish, I use Yorkshire Grit Original to refine the surface and then apply microcrystalline wax from Chestnut Products to give the bowl a smooth protective finish.
This combination of carbide turning tools, rotary carving, stains, and iridescent paint creates a truly unique bowl that highlights both texture and the natural beauty of the wood.
