In this beginner-friendly woodturning video, I show you how to make a small winged bowl from Virola wood — a simple but elegant project that’s great for learning tool control and shaping techniques.
I turned this piece on the Harvey T60S wood lathe using Easy Wood Tools carbide woodturning tools, perfect for beginners who want smooth, safe, and consistent results.
For the finish, I used Yorkshire Grit abrasive paste to polish the surface and then applied Hampshire Sheen finishing wax to bring out the warm tones and silky sheen of the Virola wood. The result is a beautiful little winged bowl that’s perfect for small items or as a display piece!
If you’re new to woodturning and want to try a slightly more advanced shape that’s still manageable, this project is a great next step after basic bowls.
