In this woodturning project I take a simple ash bowl blank and turn it into something a little different… a glow-in-the-dark grain bowl.
I start by shaping the ash blank on the lathe, forming the bowl before taking it outside and carefully burning the surface to char the grain. After the burn, I brush the soot out of the open grain to reveal the natural texture of the ash.
To make the bowl really stand out, I mix glow-in-the-dark powder with Hampshire Sheen microcrystalline wax and work it into the grain. This fills the textured areas and creates an awesome glowing effect when the lights go out.
This was a really fun experiment and a great way to highlight the beautiful grain pattern in ash.
As always, I turned this bowl on the Record Power Coronet Herald Wood Lathe using Easy Wood Tools carbide turning tools, and finished it with Yorkshire Grit Abrasive Paste.
