In this step-by-step woodturning tutorial, I show you how to make a beautiful wooden whistle from stabilized maple burl. This project is perfect for beginners and experienced turners alike!
I turned this whistle on my Harvey T60S wood lathe using Easy Wood Tools carbide tools, and for extra detail, I added accents with the Easy Wood Tools beading cutter.
Other tools you’ll need for this project:
✔ Hand saw
✔ 3/8" drill bit (drill into the blank about 1.5"–2")
✔ Chisel
Finishing steps:
Sanded to 400 grit with Klingspor abrasives
Applied a coat of Hampshire Sheen Food & Toy Safe Danish Oil for a smooth, safe finish

04:01 - Mark 3/4" and make a vertical cut half way through
04:39 - make a 45 degree cut and match up with the vertical cut
05:04 - Sand the saw marks clean
05:44 - Finish shaping
06:31 - Sanding to 400 grit
07:13 - Clean the grain
07:50 - Parting off
08:20 - Marking the length of the reed
08:44 - Taking it down to diameter
09:36 - Final fitting
09:47 -Mark the length
10:15 - Cut a quarter into the reed with a saw
10:27 - Remove the top quarter with a chisel
10:52 - Glue in the reed and apply Danish oil
