Indian club swinging is an exercise system based on the use of wooden clubs. The clubs I use are custom made at 1.2kg each.
Natural rhythm and functional movement is used to stimulate both the mind and body whilst giving you a good workout.
Despite the common English name implying an Indian origin, clubs are first recorded as being used by wrestlers in ancient Persia, Egypt and the rest of the Middle East.
They were exceptionally popular during the late Victorian era, used by the military, and appeared in the Olympics in 1904 and 1932.
Many martial artists use club swinging techniques as a way of improving grip strength, striking, mobility and co-ordination. Good club swinging is also a form of meditation in movement. They are particular beneficial for those that do martial weapons training.
Nowadays many people use clubbells for fitness and flow artists use much lighter juggling clubs for flow. Wooden Indian clubs however strike a happy medium between the two.
