Here I sit down with the new Four Roses Small Batch Select. It’s the big brother to the standard Small Batch that we’re all familiar with. For this release the abv gets pushed up to 52% (104 proof) and its non-chill filtered. Retail price is around $55 but it’s initially only rolling out into Kentucky, New York, California, Texas and Georgia with additional launch locations in the future. It uses 6 of Four Rose’s 10 mashbills in equal parts low and high rye bourbon mashbills. For those unfamiliar with all this, I’ll try and explain to make it less complicated. They use “E” or “B” in their 4-letter mashbill code. “B” means it’s using their “High Rye” mash bill of 60% Corn, 35% Rye & 5% Barley and the “E” is the “Low Rye” mashbill of 75% Corn, 20% Rye & 5% Barley. The last letter in the code is the yeast code. The different yeast imparts different characteristics. So, the first 3 are “B - high rye” OBSV (V yeast imparts a Delicate Fruitiness), OBSK (K yeast imparts Slight Spice), OBSF (F yeast imparts Herbal Essence). Then they use “E - low rye” mashbills with the same yeasts as above OESV (V yeast imparts a Delicate Fruitiness), OESK (K yeast imparts Slight Spice) and OESF (F yeast imparts Herbal Essence).
