A quick update on the fires in West Kalimantan.
The initial fires near our partners YIARI’s orangutan center have died down and the situation is currently under control. But the team cannot afford to let their guard down.
Peat fires can continue smoldering beneath the ground long after the visible flames have disappeared. These hidden hotspots are sometimes called “zombie fires” because they can suddenly flare up again.
YIARI’s teams are continuing to water and cool the land, monitor for hotspots and carry out 24-hour patrols around the center.
