My Point of View
In business, first impressions and successful personal branding are not accidental.
Be intentional about the image, energy and credibility we bring into the room. People are immediately forming a view about our professionalism, judgement and likely value.
ð© Know the Rule to Break the Rule
19. Q: Whatâs the rule for tie bars?
Tie bars should be avoided, because it can make everything seem very busy and it can be distracting from the overall look. You may already have a corporate pin or a pocket square or both and a tie bar will make things look too much. The time they are useful is when you have a three piece suit to hold the tie in place and not allow it to be pushed up by the waistcoat.
ð The 4 Vs of Executive Presence:
Visual - Do I look prepared, credible and appropriate for the situation?
Vocal - Does my voice tone sound calm and confident?
Verbal - Are my comments clear, concise and beneficial?
Value - Am I making a useful difference to the people and business around me?
ð¯ Todayâs Executive Presence Intention
Todayâs meetings:
Client meeting in Hanzomon
Lunch at the Tokyo American Club, Azabudai
On-line meeting with a marketing agency
Executive Coaching with a client at the Tokyo American Club
British Chamber joint Chamber event hosted at the Canadian Embassy in Aoyama on Japanese Immigration policy.
The impression I wanted to create:
I thought the Chamber event would pull a crowd, so I wanted to look the most professional man in the room. It didn't work out that way because they hustled us all out of the venue because it is an Embassy, and they want to lock up No real opportunity to meet clients unfortunately but I looked the best anyway!!
The Impression Construction Elements
Suit: Gianni Versace Milano 1978 light grey suit in a Prince of Wales check, with a subtle mauve window pane pattern, peak lapels, Barchetta breast pocket, 35mm double cuffs, flap pockets, side vents.
Shirt: Custom striped shirt in the Winchester style with a white collar and with white English Cuffs. Abbeyhorn Holme 1749 horn collars stays from Kirby Allison Dallas 2007.
Tie: Thomas Pink London 1984 blue tie in a Windsor knot.
Cufflinks: Light blue cufflinks.
Pocket Square: Isaia Napoli 1920 dark blue pocketsquare in a reverse puff. Stabiliser from Kuska Fabrics Kyoto 1936.
Watch: Vintage 37mm rectangular steel case Longines Saint-Imier 1832 S30 EFCo which has a black face on the dial and a steel strap.
Fragrance: Armani Mania Georgio Armani Milano 1996
ð High Shine Shoes: The high shine black shoes were wingtip Pollini San Mauro Pascoli 1953 Derbys with a brogue Ram's Head design on the medallion.
âš Todayâs Featured Detail: The solid blue tie was required to deal with the stripe in the shirt. I tried a few other ties, but the stripe was too competitive for them.
One Rule to Remember: Stripes can make an outfit look very busy, very quickly, so the balance of other items has to be considered.
