My Point of View

In business, first impressions and successful personal branding are not accidental.

Be intentional about the image, energy and credibility we bring into the room. People are immediately forming a view about our professionalism, judgement and likely value.

🎩 Know the Rule to Break the Rule

#6. Q: How long should a business tie be?

The blade of the tie should be long enough to touch the bottom of your belt buckle, if you are wearing a belt or to the top of the fly of the trousers if you are using side adjusters or suspenders. There is a bit of flexibility here, but too short or too long are both best avoided, because you look like you don't know how to dress yourself properly. Very high waisted trousers present an issue and force you to really shorten your tie, except the ties are not designed for that short length, so be careful with going too high waisted. If you look at pre-war photo, the waists were high and ties were really short.

👔 The 4 Vs of Executive Presence:

Visual - Do I look prepared, credible and appropriate for the situation?

Vocal - Does my voice tone sound calm and confident?

Verbal - Are my comments clear, concise and beneficial?

Value - Am I making a useful difference to the people and business around me?

🎯 Today’s Executive Presence Intention

Today’s meetings: Teaching a class on DEI In Sendai

The impression I wanted to create: This was a very international audience, with a tricky subject on DEI, so I went for a summer outfit with a yellow tie, pocketsquare and a white shirt look to appear less formidable and relax the class members. The rule for presenting and teaching is always wear a white shirt because you heat up and if you wear a pastel colour, dark blotches from perspiration can appear.

The Impression Construction Elements

Suit: Custom blue suit with a subtle window pane pattern, reverse double pleats, notch lapels, Barchetta breast pocket, 35mm double cuffs, flap pockets, side vents.

Shirt: Custom white shirt with English Cuffs. Abbeyhorn Holme 1749 horn collars stays from Kirby Allison Dallas 2007.

Tie: Yellow tie from Jim Thompson Bangkok 1948 in a Windsor knot.

Cufflinks: Gianni Versace Milano 1978 Medusa design gold cufflinks

Pocket Square: Yellow pocketsquare in linen from Simmonot Godard Bastogne 1787. Stabiliser from Kuska Fabrics Kyoto 1936. The colour in the photo is really yellow, but the actual pocketsquare is more of a faint lemon colour, so not as matchy, matchy as it appears.

Watch: Vintage 37mm rectangular steel case Longines Saint-Imier 1832 S30 EFCo which has a black face on the dial and a steel strap.

Fragrance: Acqua di Parma Colonia - classic from 1916

👞 High Shine Shoes: The high shine shoes were Pollini San Mauro Pascoli 1953 wing-tip Derbys.

✨ Today’s Featured Detail: The yellow tie from Jim Thompson is not something I wear often and it is very outstanding because of the strong colour.

One Rule to Remember: It is a good practice to try new combinations and see the effect they have rather than just sticking with the same combinations all the time.
