Hello again! :D

Things became very heated in Fulwood this evening when a large fire broke out at the former hospital site just up the road from where I'm living right now, the second such fire to afflict this site within the span of two months.

I had seen a convoy of fire engines heading down the Fulwood Road towards the site, and with camera in hand I set out. When I got there, the fire was clearly well-established inside, with copious amounts of smoke visibly lathering up the roof and walls of the building. Fire crews were just about to make their entrance inside the former hospital building via the second-floor fire escape.

Moments later, the first flames began to lick through the tiles as I was changing my position, and then within seconds, the entire roof was an inferno, with tiles and wooden beams collapsing down into the raging maw of the blaze. Even from a distance of 40ft from the blaze, the heat was phenomenal, while the strong wind coming from off the nearby hills only served to fan the blaze even more. Eventually, the police asked us to retreat beyond a cordon, but I was able to observe the continuing blaze from between some trees on an adjacent street, watching as it slowly picked apart the once grand mock-Tudor building piece by agonising piece.

Not to sound conspiratorial, but the circumstances of the blaze are indeed dubious and suspicious.

As mentioned, this is the second fire to hit the former Fulwood House Hospital in two months, the last blaze being on May 25th, 2025, when a large fire gutted the top floor of the 1960s-era tower on the complex (with the scorch marks and melted furnishings visible at the end of the video). Many of the local residents who had turned out to watch the blaze were very much of the opinion that these fires had been deliberately set, as proposals to redevelop the former hospital have been mired in controversy since they were first announced in 2023, with proposals being for a large estate of multi-million pound houses with views over the Mayfield Valley.

The former hospital, Fulwood House Hospital, closed in around 2020, with the site having originally been established in 1911 as an Edwardian-era mock-Tudor style family house built for a local manufacturer before being turned over to hospital uses sometime during the mid-20th Century and expanded to include several modular buildings including the 8-storey tower that formed the centrepiece of the site.

For tonight's blaze, it is tragically the classical 1911-built Edwardian House that has been subject to the ravages of fire. Based on the damage it sustained, and the fact that it is not Grade-listed, demolition of this once mighty family home come hospital is now a certainty.

Nevertheless, I'd like to give my commendation to the efforts of the brave men and women of the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, the Yorkshire Ambulance Service and the South Yorkshire Police for their excellent and professional handling of the situation.
