In the past, the newspaper train was one of British Rail's most profitable and lucrative products, providing publishers and distributors the fastest and most convenient way of transporting the latest editions across the country, with their importance being so great that these companies often set up their warehouses and businesses connected directly to the main terminal stations.
Sadly, the newspaper train was a system rooted very much in the past, and as the march of technology brought about electronic printing and transmission systems that would replace thousands of workers, a major dispute at Wapping in East London between Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation and the trade unions marked the definitive end of the newspaper train, with Murdoch opting for private road transportation over the vulnerable state-owned railway system.
