Often referred to as 'Prescott's Folly', the M4 Bus Lane was implemented as an attempt to reduce a notable bottleneck on the M4 Motorway in West London while also having the added benefit of providing faster routings for buses, coaches and taxicabs on their way into the British capital, with modelling and data provision indicating that this scheme could produce some results in terms of reducing journey times, carbon emissions and safety hazards.
In practice, however, the M4 Bus Lane demonstrated few merits and was not as well implemented as equivalent systems in Europe and the United States, with the resultant designation of the outside lane of the eastbound carriageway for buses, coaches and taxicabs only becoming a point of ridicule from across the political spectrum until the lane was closed and returned to regular traffic in December 2010.
