A true pioneer in the global aviation scene, the de Havilland DH.106 Comet, making its first flight in 1949, would become the world's first passenger jet airliner, entering service in 1952 on the flagship routes of BOAC, and cementing the potential promise that Britain would lead the way technologically and stylistically for air travel during the 1950s.
Sadly, the Comet is known less for its pioneering nature, and more for a string of crashes it incurred due to the then largely unknown phenomenon of metal fatigue, and with multiple Comet losses resulting in a length grounding and redevelopment of the airliner, Britain's international rivals were able to catch up and surpass the Comet with the likes of the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8, carving up the future of the air travel market, and starting the protracted beginning of the demise of Britain's aircraft industry.
