Final Fantasy IV: Ultima is a hack by 8-bit fan that aims to present a more expansive version of the classic. New weapons, spells, bosses, and a modified overworld are just a few of the changes on tap.
The latest version of the patch can always be found here:
romhacking.net/hacks/4134
Version being played: 21.5
Time to see what this fabled boss rush is like. Enter the boss rush via the door in the back of the Crystal Spire where the Eclipse weapon was to find the boss rush room.
There's three colorless NPCs around the outer portion of the area. One just tells you the rules of the boss rush (Namingway on the western side), another provides access to your storage (chocobo on the eastern side), and a random jerk black mage in the north.
In the center of the area is a sparkle and a blue flame. The sparkle heals everyone to full strength while the blue flame is what you interact with to begin the boss rush. Just need to present the Hero Medal to the flame to begin the festivities.
The rules are quite simple...you get to fight damn near every boss fought in the game and even some specific normal enemy formations. Instead of fighting everything back to back to back with no breaks in between, the battles are broken up into waves. Completing a wave rewards you with some items and a chance to heal up and change gear around before examining the blue flame to begin the next wave.
As for team members to bring...bringing a couple healers is a good idea as well as someone that can hit really hard, usually Rydia or Palom...or both really since Palom's Boast can help enhance spell damage when you need that extra kick. Physical damage dealers are a little more tricksy to make work...unless your name is DK Cecil spamming the hell out of Bane for massive damage.
Once you start breaking down the first wave, it seems fun kicking around early game bosses...until an army of EIGHT Edwards shows up. Taking those shenanigans even farther are we sir?
Despite the 8 Edwards, they're surprisingly docile at first. Using a big AoE attack though will prompt one of them to counter with Sword Rain (Marilith's move) on a single target, killing them instantly. Since only one counters and not every single copy Edward robot in existence, you need only devote one or two party members to offensive roles here.
After doing enough damage, the clones will all put up Wall. Shouldn't be a big issue, but they all start spamming Tornado afterwards. Not a bad idea to pop an All-Potion afterwards just in case they decide to physically strike.
After a few more fights ending with a battle against four DK Cecils, you'll get your wave 1 completion rewards consisting of an Anti Matter, two Megalixirs, and three All-Potions.
Wave 2 has more of the same, but this time the first curveball comes after taking down the Vulture & 3x Cocatrice battle. The fight right after is the Dark Elf which, at first, seems like another beatdown...and you'd be right on that line of thinking.
The problem? The very next fight Dark Elf returns and gets a surprising power boost. He only has two attacks in his script, but you'd be right to get wide eyed when he says "Blast you!", then hits someone REALLY freaking hard. You'd likely need Adamant Armors and/or defense buffs just to not see someone getting pasted instantly for 9-10k damage. Lunar Veils for the phys attack protection works too to nullify the damage completely.
The other move? Quake. Hits everyone for a couple thousand points of damage each. Could be a real nasty surprise if you just use a simple Life potion to bring someone back on their feet. So long as you have a couple good ways to heal the team, you should be able to get through without much hassle.
After beating up Rubicante, the second wave ends and you'll pick up your rewards, two Anti Matters and four Lunar Veils.
More next time!
