Final Fantasy IV: Ultima is a hack by 8-bit fan that aims to present a more expansive version of the classic. New weapons, spells, bosses, and a modified overworld are just a few of the changes on tap.
The latest version of the patch can always be found here:
romhacking.net/hacks/4134
Version being played: 20k
Looks to be the last real thing I can do from the v12 added stuff here before the rest is locked behind defeating Goddess so let's see what this new area has in store.
To access this new dungeon, you'll need an airship capable of flying over lava, meaning the earliest you can reach this story wise is right after you can enter the Sealed Cave to claim the last Dark Crystal. Take your airship to the Magma Caverns (north of Kokkol's Forge), then fly through the new opening in the wall to the east. Head north when the path allows it to find the Volcano entrance or elect to continue east to wrap around to the western side of the underworld.
The Volcano is small, only having three areas to its name, but has plenty of gear to pickup that'll be helpful for the Sealed Cave and beyond. The first area has two visible items to collect, both with enemies guarding them.
For the item on the north side, there's a Fossil & Bone Dragon duo. Enemies from the moon, but even then shouldn't pose a threat so long as you use your best fire or holy aligned weapons & spells. The reward is a pair of brand new consumables, the Elf Cloak (Grants protect & shell) and the Ethereal Mantle (grants phys dmg nullification).
As for the spear? It's actually the Flame Lance from the Magma Caverns, that's the good news. The bad news? Three Red Dragons guard it. Unlike the other guards, this trio can be very dangerous since you don't have access to mass fire resistance or defense versus dragon type enemies. As such, their physicals can sting something fierce. Even better if they get to their third turn because they now do two physical strikes in a turn, meaning six physical blows you're gonna have to endure. Luckily my Rydia knew Ice 4 so she could do some insane damage. Two casts of it is likely going to be enough to drop the dragons, especially if the others chip in some AoE damage.
Heading deeper into the area, you'll find the Magma Giant from the Tower of Babil popping up in random battles, sometimes alongside a Liquid Flame.
On the lowest floor, you'll find...the Magma Caverns. Interesting perhaps, but in reality the actual Magma Caverns got reworked into a two room area. The Magma Golem optional boss still resides there.
As for the current area. it's like the old Magma Caverns, but you're going in reverse, starting at the southern end, then working your way north while collecting all the loot. It's the same as the old area with the exception of the Flame Lance that used to be here being replaced by a second Deathbringer...and a sword that can't be claimed until after Goddess (and has an optional boss attached to it).
One last minor clip to close out the video. It's a quick battle with the Demon Wall boss again to show off one interesting change it has undergone, namely that any magic used triggers an AoE gradual petrify. Probably not something you'll be getting too concerned over, especially if you're using mostly physical attacks for damage.
Next time, we'll be back on the optional boss circuit post Goddess.
