Went to Clarksville on Saturday to risk one of their Thunderbeams that had supposedly been fixed and was working as of December when we heard them all the way in Cuba while at the Vortex. I did not have high confidence this thing would work, given my bad luck with older sirens not working lately, but it roared to life right after the tones went out today. This is currently the only working siren in Clarksville; the other Thunderbeam at the old school by the water tower still does not work as I could not hear it during the test (it would have been audible had it worked, since it's only about half a mile away).
I haven't heard a Thunderbeam since 2018 when I recorded the one in Niles (in Trumbull County), so it was great to finally hear one again. All in all, this siren was very punchy and quite potent, but it was not as loud as the three phase unit I had heard two years ago; although the lower pitch from the single phase motor probably gives this siren an advantage coverage-wise. All of the Whelen sirens in Clinton County run alert, airhorn, and hi-lo for testing, but the mechanical sirens are incapable of doing this and do 3 alerts for tests.
Both Thunderbeams in Clarksville appear to have been installed used and probably came from somewhere else in Clinton County or the surrounding area, given the dents in the metal cage around the deflector plate. I've heard rumors that they came from Wilmington, but I haven't found anything that proves this. Anyways, I hope you enjoy the video!
Sirens in Clinton County are tested on the First Saturday of the month at noon, weather-permitting. This unit is located at the Clinton-Warren Joint Fire District in Clarksville.
