Today I met up with Bruin (StormWarning04), Frankie, and Bruin's friend Miles at this 508 located in Montville Township in Medina County. This 508 was installed in 2014 as part of Montville Township's tornado siren system. This siren is located on Paradise Rd (County Highway 121). We weren't sure at first if we were going to find a spot to record, but scored a great spot in an empty lot about 50 feet or so from the siren. I'm glad we recorded this when we did, because by the looks of the stakes placed all over, this lot won't be empty for long and soon a house will likely be here.
At first we weren't sure if Medina County was testing as the FSK didn't come through at noon like usual, but thankfully at 12:02 FSK blasted through the scanner and this siren roared to life. Oh, and the rumbling noise heard around 2:30 was Cleveland Clinic Lifeflight's helicopter flying low overhead, probably on their way to the main campus from somewhere.
This 508 appears to have been worked on by FFS and has had its rotator bushings replaced, evident by the "FS" decal on the rear of the unit (no, this is not a new installation, if you were wondering; decals are affixed to the rear on purpose by Federal or their dealers when rotator bushings are replaced on 508s to signify they have been serviced and updated). This siren must have had its batteries replaced as well, as it was very high pitched for a 508 and sounded extremely healthy. Also evident to recent servicing was the new FFS sticker on the control boxes. Visual inspection of all three other 508's proved this unit is the only one to have new rotator bushings as the rear-affixed "FS" decal is absent on the other three units. I'm guessing this unit likely had problems activating at some point and was called in to Medina County EMA or to Montville Township themselves, who called Federal Field to remedy the issue. In either case, this siren sounds great now and will continue to warn Montville Township for years to come.
Montville Township has 4 508's, all installed in mid-2014 after being purchased by the township and partially funded through grants from the Medina County EMA and the Ohio Emergency Management Agency.
Medina County tests sirens countywide on the First Saturday of the month at noon (excluding Westfield Township, Spencer, Chippewa Lake, and Chatham, which do not test or have sirens which are manually activated). Enjoy!
