"Sun Go Down" by Fat Night

Every sunset is unique, ranging from magical to mind-blowing. The beautiful color that cascades off the clouds and lays across the horizon is serene and gives any person their own sense of wonder and oneness with the world. Maybe it’s primal, wired deeply in our consciousness, but it's innate for us humans to be collectively amazed by the gentle glow of our giant fireball in the sky.
Or maybe it’s the metaphorical turning of a page, on the largest scale possible. We can put the troubles of the day behind us, look forward and move on. This is what “Sun Go Down” gifts us with when listening. A reminder of the magnificent moment between day and night. Also, one catchy ass chorus.
Fat Night is a R&B/soul group led by keyboardist and vocalist Gabe Gundacker. The band also includes Dan Hanson on the guitar, Nik Ritchie on the drums and Ted Issen on the bass. Originally from Orlando, Florida, they met in middle school and became close friends. Their first single “Things You Do” was released in 2013, followed with their first album that same year, “Fat Night”. In 2015 the band came out with the six-song EP “Lazy Days”, where this song is featured.
“Sun Go Down” is a great representation of Fat Night’s collective sound. Harmony that is delicious to the ear, backed with a jazzy, soulful bass line and creative syncopation. This song also features some dope pitch-shifting on the keyboard that is common of jazz, soul, and R&B songs, however the final moments of this song stick out to me the most. After many listens I still can not get enough of that chorus. It feels as though the whole song builds up for this final moment and Fat Night brilliantly changes up the tempo. The shift hits me as I know there is only so much time left, almost like the final seconds of a wondrous sunset.
