Daley Ranch in Escondido is a hidden gem in San Diego County. Established in 1863 by Robert Daley, Daley Ranch is now a preserve that protects over 3,000 acres of historical ranch land. But the area came close to being lost to development.
The Daley family owned the ranch land for over 100 years, but in the 1980s they worked with an oil company to develop the property with the plan to build over 3,000 houses and a golf course.
Fortunately, the city of Escondido was able to buy the land for $21 million in the 1990s, and the land is now protected. Daley Ranch now has over 25 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails.
Also protected are some of the original buildings from the ranch, including the ranch house that was built in 1925 and a barn dating back to the 1800s.
