In the remote San Pedro Valley of Cochise County, Arizona, lie the ruins of Presidio Santa Cruz de Terrenate, a military disaster for the Spanish Empire and a testament to the strength of the Apache.
Built in 1775 to guard the northern edge of New Spain, this presidio was intended to be a symbol of Spanish authority. Instead, it became a deadly trap. Within five years of construction, three Spanish commanders were killed in ambushes, dozens of soldiers were lost, and the fort was abandoned, as the Spanish were forced from the area.
In this video we travel into the San Pedro River Valley and to the ruins of Presidio Santa Cruz de Terrenate where the Apache drove off one of the greatest empires in human history.
