Hidden along the New Mexico–Arizona border lies a place that once terrified travelers across the Southwest. Its name was Doubtful Canyon… because people entering it doubted they would make it out alive.
In this video we head into the remote Peloncillo Mountains to explore the site of one of the most feared stretches of trail in the Old West. Along the way, we talk about the history of the Butterfield Overland Mail, the Bascom Affair, Cochise, Mangas Coloradas, the Apache Wars, the infamous Giddings stagecoach ambush, and the forgotten Skirmish at Doubtful Canyon.
Today, Interstate 10 passes just a few miles away, and most people speeding through the desert have no idea what happened here. But in the 1860s, this canyon was one of the most feared places in the American Southwest.
