Cultural historian Amber Roessner is an expert on former President Jimmy Carter. Following Carter’s death in 2024, she was sought out on a global scale to offer insight on his campaign, leadership, and post-presidential image.
A professor in the School of Journalism and Media at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Roessner deciphers how journalism, public relations, and advertising construct political image.
She calls the process by which narratives are constructed by media and politics “image craft” and focuses on how Carter’s image evolved over time. Her research also explores how the 1976 election established what she says became the new rules of US presidential politics—principles that are still reflected in campaigns today.
