If you want to expand Synology volume size in case you are starting to get low on free space, there is a way to do that without suffering data loss and without needing to copy all your data off the NAS. The process is pretty easy when done correctly, but keep in mind the following caveats.
Let me start by saying that in the process of expanding Synology volume size any user, beginner or professional, any user in any experience level has his hands hiver a little in a process like this. Also, in order to expand Synology volume size, you have to be running your volume in a raid array that supports redundancy. like for example, raid1, raid5, raid6, etc. raid0 is a no go!
Once you are ready to start the expanding of the Synology volume size, you need to do it gradually. once drive after the other and after each drive you MUST launch a volume repair action. if you try to pull out all drives at once, your volume and data are toast.
So, expand Synology volume size if you already larger capacity drives on hand, just remember to follow the steps in the video, go gradually, keep cool, it will be over soon :-) do not attempt to intervene in the process. do not reboot your NAS, don't try to re-pull the drives, or anything else, just let the Synology NAS do its thing.
