ust installed Home Assistant? In this beginner-friendly guide, I walk you through the first 5 steps you should do immediately—so your setup is stable, organized, and ready for future automations. We cover Static IP, File Editor, Areas/Floors/Labels + sane naming, automatic encrypted Backups, and HACS (community add-ons & cards).
Step 1 locks in a static IP so your dashboard and integrations don’t break when your router hands out a new address. Step 2 installs the File Editor add-on so you can safely tweak configuration.yaml right from the browser—no SSH required.
Step 3 is all about structure: create Areas (rooms), optionally add Floors, and rename devices/entities with clear, consistent names. This makes dashboards cleaner and automations easier (no more switch.abcd1234). Step 4 enables scheduled, encrypted backups so you can roll back fast and protect your work.
