The oldest city in Europe is older than you think! 🌆
Lepenski Vir in Serbia was first built by hunter-gatherers. The site dates back to as early as 9500 BCE and boasts these amazingly fascinating trapezoidal-shaped huts with in-built stone hearths. This was a planned community before many other places around the world even knew what that meant.
Lepenski Vir also is a fantastic snippet of sedentary life transforming from hunting and gathering into farming, as people lived here along the banks of the Danube River for thousands of years.
Perhaps the cutest but also most mysterious ancient artefacts found at Lepenski Vir are the stone figurines that appear to be human-fish hybrids. These were installed directly into the floors of the huts and archaeologists are still unsure as to their exact meaning 🪨🐟
What do you think the figurines were used for/ meant?
