Nawarla Gabarnmang is home to 1,300 rock art motifs, with the oldest dating to 28,000 years ago! Located on Jawoyn country in Northern Australia, excavations at this large sandstone rock-shelter have shown that it has been inhabited as early as 44,000 years ago!
The site provides extensive insight into the deep history of the Jawoyn people and has been likened to a cathedral with its striking pillars and immensely decorated ceiling. It held a significant place in Indigenous Jawoyn culture for centuries.
People were coming to Nawarla Gabarnmang and adding to its art for over 20,000 years. Thanks to a charcoal layer behind an old piece that had fallen off the ceiling, archaeologists were able to use radiocarbon dating to determine that it was 28,000 years old! This makes it the oldest securely dated prehistoric art in Australia 🤯
