The Hanging Gardens of Babylon have never been found, and we still can’t prove they even existed in the first place. Our evidence for them only comes from ancient Greek and Roman writers, centuries after they were supposedly built. The gardens are an enigma, and definitely the most mysterious of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. So let’s look at some of the history of Babylon, other royal gardens in Mesopotamia, and compare classical writings with the archaeological record.

Despite all the excavating and research done, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon have never been identified, and their actual existence has never actually been proven. As a consolation, even if the gardens never existed, we do know that the city walls of Babylon did, and they still do today in some sense. And if we’re taking other ancient lists of the seven wonders into account, like Strabo’s then no matter what, Babylon can safely stay on the permanent list!
