In 1991, with the fall of the Soviet Union and the end of communist rule in Russia, 12 years after they first found the remains, an investigation was launched by the Russian government.

They sent in a team of archaeologists to excavate the area, and Avdonin’s report was proven correct. 9 bodies were found in total. While the bones were badly damaged, and no clothing remained to help in identification, modern developments in DNA meant that scientists could indeed get to work on determining if these were in fact the remains of the Imperial family.
