An EU spokesperson reiterated the European Union’s opposition to Israel’s E1 settlement project in the West Bank.

The spokesperson said the Israeli government has published a tender for the construction of more than 1,200 housing units under the so-called E1 settlement plan.

According to the EU, implementation of the plan would harm the prospects of a two-state solution by dividing the West Bank in two and isolating East Jerusalem.

The spokesperson warned that the project comes at a time of further instability in the West Bank and record levels of settler violence.

The EU’s position remains clear: Israeli settlements in the West Bank, including in the E1 area, are illegal under international law.

The spokesperson urged the Government of Israel to withdraw the tender, halt the E1 plans and other settlement expansion projects, and ensure accountability for settler violence.

The EU also recalled that the Commission President joined a joint leaders’ statement opposing this settlement expansion.
