An EU Commission spokesperson said Italy remains fully on board with the Security Action for Europe — SAFE defence project.

The spokesperson stressed that Italy has an extremely competent military industry and plays a crucial role for the European Union as a whole.

Asked about Italy’s use of SAFE loans, the Commission said it has received many reassurances from the Italian authorities that Italy will take a large majority of the loans allocated to it.

According to the spokesperson, this shows that Italy remains fully committed to the wider European defence project.

The Commission also said that even if Italy does not take up all the loans, the remaining money will not be lost.

Any unused SAFE funds will be reallocated to other member states that need additional defence loans.

The spokesperson summed up the message clearly: Italy is fully on board, and no money is going to be wasted.
