An EU Commission spokesperson declined to comment on the candidacy of Hans Kluge to become the next Director-General of the World Health Organization, saying the nomination process is still open.

The spokesperson said the Commission does not comment on the process at this stage.

However, the EU underlined that the World Health Organization remains an important partner and a cornerstone of international health cooperation.

The spokesperson also stressed that the European Union, together with its member states, is the largest financial contributor to the WHO.

The Commission said it will continue working with the World Health Organization and advocating for a strong and resilient global health body, including cooperation on fighting diseases around the world.
