EU High Representative Kaja Kallas responded to questions about whether several EU countries opposing a ban on trade with settlement goods are blocking stronger action over violence against Palestinians.
Asked whether countries such as Germany, Austria, Hungary and Czechia could be considered complicit if they veto such a measure, Kallas said every Member State has the right to decide its own position and must explain that decision.
But she said the issue illustrates a deeper problem inside the European Union: Member States have different views, and that is why the EU has not been able to move forward on banning trade with settlements.
At the same time, Kallas stressed that the EU remains united on several key issues related to Israel and Palestine.
She said the European Union supports the two-state solution, remains one of the biggest donors to the Palestinian Authority, and continues to provide humanitarian support to Palestinians.
But on the specific question of settlement trade, Kallas admitted clearly: the EU does not have agreement.
Her message exposes the political reality in Brussels: Europe condemns settler violence, but internal divisions are still blocking stronger economic measures.
