An EU Commission spokesperson said trade defence investigations in the automotive sector are conducted under a strict legal framework, with full respect for due process, transparency and established deadlines.
Asked about reports concerning China and the automotive sector, the spokesperson said the Commission does not comment on comments, but explained how EU trade defence procedures work.
The Commission recalled its anti-subsidy investigation into battery electric vehicles from China, saying such investigations examine whether subsidies exist, whether they cause or threaten injury, whether EU producers are harmed, and whether any measure is in the Union’s interest.
The spokesperson stressed that the Commission only takes trade defence measures after a thorough investigation carried out over several months.
In the China electric vehicles case, the investigation took around one year to complete.
The Commission also underlined the importance of ensuring that trade defence investigations by WTO members comply with WTO rules, while clarifying that EU investigations are not coordinated with partners.
