EU High Representative Kaja Kallas warned that Europe must do more to protect critical infrastructure beneath the sea.
Speaking ahead of the Informal Meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers — Gymnich in Druids Glen, County Wicklow, Ireland, Kallas said ministers discussed the protection of critical infrastructure with defence ministers the day before.
She pointed to upcoming joint exercises and projects of common interest aimed at improving Europe’s ability to monitor and protect critical infrastructure.
Kallas said the challenge is difficult because undersea infrastructure does not have the same visibility as infrastructure on land.
But she stressed that Europe has new tools available, including underwater drones, better monitoring systems and lessons from Ukraine’s battlefield innovation.
Her warning was clear: what lies beneath the sea is vital to Europe’s security. Subsea cables, pipelines and undersea networks must be protected before sabotage or attacks cause serious damage.
