German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said Europe is entering an autumn full of major challenges — and must respond with unity to Russian aggression.
Speaking at the Informal Meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers — Gymnich in Druids Glen, County Wicklow, Ireland, Wadephul welcomed the strong European support for Germany’s response to the attempted attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport.
Germany has blamed Russia for an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport on 4 August 2026, and Berlin announced a series of measures in response.
Wadephul said the support Germany has received from EU partners — and from countries beyond the EU, including Canada — sends a clear message to Moscow: Europe stands together.
He said Russia must understand that its attempt to impose its claims by military force, violence and hybrid means has failed.
Wadephul also underlined Germany’s continued support for Ukraine, saying Europe must prepare for winter and look again at concrete military support, especially in air defence.
He said some Member States still have reserves that should now be discussed, so that Russia’s ballistic missile and drone attacks cannot succeed.
On EU reform, Wadephul argued that Europe must become fit for the 21st century and capable of acting in global politics. He said the EU must be able to take foreign-policy decisions by majority vote and discuss reforms proposed by France and Germany.
His message was firm: Europe wants dialogue and peace, but Russia must face consequences. Pressure on Moscow will increase, sanctions on individuals will continue, and support for Ukraine will remain high. Reuters also reported that Wadephul said the EU will work on further sanctions against Russian individuals in the coming weeks.
