Now that the game has finally been released, it is time to archive the full campaign of this great party brawler. Etrange Overlord offers a very unique experience as you play as the elegant Etrange who perishes and gets sent to Hell. She decides not to sob and instead live her best afterlife in the depths of Hell and assemble a large army of colorful characters to do her bidding.
Then with the help of her friends she will travel through Hell, Heaven and even go back to her old kingdom in order to stop a sinister plot.
The game presents itself with long cutscenes that do sometimes outlast their welcome, but are often very well written and funny. The real charm in the game comes in its varied gameplay as you partake in brawling matches where you and 3 comrades will have to complete various objectives like take out waves of enemies or capture and hold certain points on the map.
It feels very much like a party game and Etrange Overlord can be enjoyed with up to 3 other friends in co-op.
Each map often has a unique mechanic or gimmick which makes each battle feel fresh and you really need to work together to succeed. Certain devices like turrets need to be manned by a player and then another player can get batteries for the turret to operate. At other times you need to collect key items and return them to your team's base. You can throw the items to your fellow players in order to save time and outsmart the enemy team.
The friendly AI is quite competent as they also use upgrades and devices, but later in the game there were a few matches where it was clear that they could not keep up with the enemy team and I had to carry most of it.
Other than that it is a very charming game that goes a lot deeper and has a lot more variety than one might think at first glance. The whole game is packaged in a sweet and cute anime style and the end result is a game unlike most others. Fun for everyone!
