In his opera debut VIOLANTA, 18-year-old Erich Wolfgang Korngold already finds his typical tone between oscillation and overwhelm.
In terms of content, VIOLANTA revolves between decadence and a sense of the end times, Freudian psychoanalysis and instinctuality, carnival and catharsis.
In his new production, director David Hermann takes us on a journey deep into the psyche of the title character and contrasts the one-act play VIOLANTA with two works as a prologue: John Dowland's lute piece ‘A Fancy P5’ and Alban Berg's 1st movement ‘Prelude’ from the Three Orchestral Pieces, Op. 6.
The premiere will take place on 25 January 2026, with follow-up performances on 29 January and 4, 6 and 13 February 2026.
