Giuseppe Verdi’s opera AIDA was originally intended to be the first performance at the opening festivities of the Egyptian Suez Canal, but political events in Europe meant that the work was not performed in Cairo until almost two years later. It was a triumph nonetheless, with Maestro Verdi in attendance being called before the curtain a total of 32 times.
Benedikt von Peter’s production at the Deutsche Oper Berlin subverts both the performance history and any visual expectation – and, with its dolby surround theatre, makes the music the star of the evening.
