Think of video editing like building blocks. You start with a foundation, then build on it to eventually shape your building.
So in order to craft an impactful video for your organization, you want to start with the core, then work your way up to the accessories.
First, cut together what we call a-roll. That’s the story - anything that is said in the video, whether that’s interview or narration. Select the best take, cut off space at the beginning and end, and maybe even splice sentences together.
Next, add a music track that matches the mood. Either splice it or fade out to make it slightly longer than the a-roll.
Then, tackle the b-roll. That’s the visuals, shots of the subject matter that are laid on top of the a-roll. Cut these together to illustrate what is said in the video. Try to use sequences of at least three shots and time cuts to occur at music beats.
Finally, add text and graphics. At the very least, put your logo and website at the end of the video. You can also add captions, which are the spoken word in text on screen and what we call lower thirds, that’s this name text here.
Taa daa! One high-impact video, edited and ready to serve your mission.
